We are thrilled to announce that three exceptional Young Lions Jazz Conservatory students have been selected to join two of the most prestigious high school jazz ensembles in the United States. This opportunity comes as part of the Next Generation Jazz Education Program, presented by the Monterey Jazz Festival and supported by Kaiser Permanente.
🎷 Kahlil Childs – 2nd Alto Saxophone, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra (NGJO)
🎺 Tiam Khosravan – 5th Trumpet, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra (NGJO)
🎹 Annie Verkoczy – Piano, Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo (NGWIJC)
These highly selective ensembles represent the best of the next generation of jazz talent. We couldn’t be prouder of our students’ accomplishments!
🎶 About the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra (NGJO)
The NGJO, directed by GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer Gerald Clayton, unites top high school jazz musicians from across the country. These talented students are selected through a rigorous blind audition process. They have the chance to perform at one of the world’s most iconic jazz festivals.
In 2025, the NGJO will:
Participate in two virtual rehearsals over the summer
Convene in Monterey, CA for in-person rehearsals, master classes, and workshops
Perform live on the Jimmy Lyons Arena Stage at the 68th Monterey Jazz Festival in September
As members of the 2025 NGJO, Kahlil and Tiam will proudly represent YLJC at the highest national level. We’re excited for them to bring their voices to this elite ensemble.
🎵 About the Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo (NGWIJC)
Led by acclaimed bassist and educator Katie Thiroux, the NGWIJC was formed in 2019 to highlight outstanding high school women jazz players from around the country. This combo provides invaluable performance experience and mentorship to help young women develop into future jazz leaders.
We’re excited to announce that YLJC pianist Annie Verkoczy has been selected for this groundbreaking ensemble. She will embark on an inspiring journey that includes:
✨ Two virtual rehearsals before September
🎶 An in-person appearance at the 68th Monterey Jazz Festival, which includes rehearsals, master classes, workshops, and performances
🎤 A featured performance with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra on the main Arena stage at the festival
🎹 A special invitation to Berklee College of Music in January 2025 for auditions, workshops, and performances in collaboration with the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice
This remarkable achievement marks an exciting step forward for Annie in her already promising career.
💬 Why This Recognition Matters
This recognition is significant. These three students join a legacy of YLJC musicians who have performed, studied, and led at the highest levels of jazz. Programs like NGJO and NGWIJC don't just celebrate talent—they invest in it. They provide students with the chance to learn from renowned artists, collaborate with peers nationwide, and share their artistry on legendary stages.
At YLJC, we believe in nurturing the whole artist. Watching Kahlil, Tiam, and Annie grow into young professionals and gain recognition for their dedication is what this work is all about.
🌟 The Importance of Mentorship in Jazz Education
Mentorship plays a vital role in the development of young jazz musicians. Experienced artists guide students in honing their craft and navigating their careers. Programs like NGJO and NGWIJC emphasize the value of mentorship, fostering relationships that last a lifetime.
Through these connections, we see our students gain confidence and sharpen their skills. Mentors share their wisdom, inspiring the next generation of jazz talent. They help students understand the nuances of performance, composition, and improvisation, laying the groundwork for future success.
🎤 Opportunities for Growth
The experiences offered through the Next Generation Jazz Education Program are unparalleled. From virtual rehearsals to live performances, these students are given opportunities that can shape their futures. By participating in master classes and workshops, they learn essential skills that go beyond music.
Networking is another crucial aspect. Meeting fellow musicians and professionals in the industry opens doors for future collaborations. These connections often lead to new opportunities that can enhance their careers in music.
A heartfelt thank-you goes to Kaiser Permanente, the Premier Sponsor of the Next Generation Jazz Education Program. Your support makes these life-changing experiences possible.
👏 Please join us in congratulating Kahlil, Tiam, and Annie for this tremendous honor! We are so excited to see them take the stage at the Monterey Jazz Festival and beyond.
This path they are on is just the beginning. We look forward to seeing how they will inspire others with their music and passion for jazz.
