The Dizzy Gillespie College Scholarship

Honoring Passion in the Spirit of Jazz
The Dizzy Gillespie College Scholarship is a prestigious award designed to support outstanding students as they take the next step in their educational journey. Established in memory of Jerry Witt, this scholarship reflects the spirit of mentorship and passion that definesYoung Lions Jazz Conservatory (YLJC).
This $5,000 scholarship supports a current YLJC student who is graduating in 2025 and heading to college—regardless of their intended major. The funds are unrestricted, allowing recipients to use them in the way that best supports their transition to higher education.
The recipient will be honored in a special presentation, receiving the award alongside a historic photograph of Dizzy Gillespie and Gilbert Castellanos, as well as a new photo celebrating Gilbert with the scholarship recipient—symbolizing the passing of inspiration from one generation to the next.
Why Dizzy Gillespie?
This scholarship is named in honor of the legendary Dizzy Gillespie, whose generosity and mentorship helped shape the career of YLJC’s artistic director, Gilbert Castellanos. When Gilbert was a high school student, Dizzy personally took an interest in him and helped him secure a full presidential scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. This scholarship aims to inspire future generations in the same way—by providing students with the resources and encouragement to follow their dreams.
