A single rhythm changed the course of jazz. When trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie joined forces with Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo, they ignited a sound the world had never heard. This concert celebrates their groundbreaking collaboration and the birth of Afro-Cuban jazz, with foundational hits “Manteca,” “Tin Tin Deo,” “Cubana Be, Cubana Bop,” and many others performed by San Diego Symphony's Jazz curator and 10-time San Diego Music Award winner Gilbert Castellanos alongside the KSDS Jazz Orchestra.

Young musicians of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory All-Stars will perform a pre-concert set of jazz music onstage beginning at 6:30pm.
